Book release of ‘Global Future. The Next Challenge for Asian Business'
15 March 2005 – Singapore

Horasis launched today 'Global Future. The Next Challenge for Asian Business' (Wiley, New York and Singapore), a book authored by Frank-Jürgen Richter, President of Horasis, Arnoud De Meyer, and and Peter Williamson, both Professors at INSEAD and Pamela C.M. Mar, World Economic Forum.

‘Look at any list of truly global companies - those with integrated management and operations across multiple borders' - says Frank-Jürgen Richter, 'and one notes that Asian companies are sorely underrepresented. Notwithstanding the early internationalization successes of Japanese and Korean conglomerates and the more recent international forays by Chinese companies, one must recognize that much of the promise of the Asian multinationals leading a "Pacific century" has yet to be realized'.

Global Future: The Next Challenge for Asian Business is a direct response to growing ambitions of Asian companies to go global and the rising pressures on them to internationalize. Industry change, political shifts and advancements in technology have brought about fundamental changes in the structure of competition, which challenge the traditional strengths of Asian companies. For those that have grown on the back of national protection and information asymmetries, the environment has become tougher than ever. By profiling early leaders and leading contemporary globalizers, the authors show how Asian companies can best climb the globalization staircase and develop the strategies and the capabilities needed to succeed in the global future.

‘Global Future: The Next Challenge of Asian Business' reveals how Asia's giants have grown into multinational companies and provides insight into how today's globalizers can achieve the same success. The book offers a combination of case studies from business leaders, authoritative material on business strategy, and their “globalization staircase” framework to show how Asian companies have succeeded in the past and can potentially succeed in the future. By looking at three distinct stages of Asian companies' globalization - from early pioneers, to current network builders, to today's newcomers - the authors paint a rich picture of how Asian companies at different levels of development can best meet the challenges of a global future.

The book features case studies on Sony - by Nobuyuki Idei, Chairman and CEO, Kikkoman - by Yuzaburo Mogi, Chairman, Samsung Electronics - by Yun Jong Yong, CEO, Li & Fung - by Victor Fung, CEO, Singapore Telecom - by Lee Hsien Yang, CEO, Olam - by Sunny Verghese, CEO, Uni-President - by C.Y. Kao, Founder and Chairman, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China - by Jiang Jianqing, Chairman and China Netcom Corporation - by Edward Tian, CEO.

Additional chapters include insights on Strategy and Network Building - by Orit Gadiesh, Bain and Company, Financing - by Kwong Ki Chi, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd., Human Resources - by L Kevin Kelly, Heidrick & Struggles, and Branding - by Miles Young, Ogilvy and Mather.
