Writing one of the greatest economic comeback stories in recent years, Thailand is prepared to be one of the strongest performing Asian economies in the years to come. ‘Located at the centre of ASEAN and representing its second largest economy, Thailand is the ideal location to advance the region’s economic, political and social agenda,’ conveyed Kobkarn Suriyasat Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Thailand, during the opening dinner. She also said the Horasis Asia Meeting was a sound success, gathering 400 senior business leaders from around Asia and the world.

In a tribute to H.M. Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Veerasak Footralul, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thailand, emphasized the middle path as an overriding principle for appropriate economic, political and personal conduct. Based on H.M. The King’s approach, Yukio Hatoyama, Former Prime Minister, Japan, proposed his vision for a pan-Asian leadership agenda: ‘We need to restore morals and increase social welfare,’ he said. Amit Mitra, Minister for Finance, Commerce & Industries, West Bengal, India, stated that ‘India will become the growth engine of the world economy in the medium to long term.’

Delegates reflected on the current state of the regional and global economy. According to Serge Pun, Chairman, Serge Pun & Associates, Myanmar, Asia should foster a global recovery provided nations co-operate and do not retrench into protectionism as a populist reaction against globalisation. ‘Against all odds, globalization is here to stay,’ added Piyush Gupta, Chief Executive Officer, DBS Bank, Singapore. ‘I am confident that Japan’s economy will post accelerated growth in the years to come,’ said Shoei Yamana, Chief Executive Officer, Konica Minolta, Japan. Fuelled by China’s ‘One Road, One Belt’-initiative, the region as a whole is expecting growth of well above 5% in 2017,’ concluded Harry C. Hui, Founder and Managing Partner, ClearVue Partners, China.
